Thought I'd just remind you that there are a few opportunities to partake in the pip and long eared counts again this month.
I'll pop over and do the count at Cwm Rheidol on Wednesday 2nd but I don't hold out much hope that there will be more than a handful. If anyone wants to keep me company I'll be glad to see you but don't forget the midge spray!
We're due to do the long eared roost on 3rd or 4th, most likely the 3rd of course as the weather looks good all week
On the 9th July, we have the school from Manchester visiting. I had said that we would meet at Cwm Rheildol but I'm now thinking of doing a talk and walk with them and will need to organise with them where and at what time so I'll post about that one, once organised. I will need some help please.
The fourth count for the pips is on the 17th or 18th and the last for the long eared on the 22nd or the 23rd.
As you know there'll be opportunities to get involved with the Rare Woodland Bat stuff too. Date for that have not yet been set. I think this will be rather on the fly so to speak so once we've had the training just keep you eyes open on the Group Facebook page.
Don't say I don't keep you informed one way or another.

Dates for your diary, and the Rare Woodland Bats Project
Hi all,
June is slipping away and if you haven't been out to one of our surveys there's only a few left to do now. The next is Friday 20th at Cwm Rheidol - check the programme to see where that is and when or email me. It will be a late one as it's nearly Mid Summer!
In July we start all over again but we don't have to do these so some dates maybe cancelled in favour of the Rare Woodland Bat Survey which will start in July too. I'm trying to get a consensus for a date early in July to go out with Henry, do a survey with his help and then look at the data. Please let me know if you have a preference.
We've also set up a Facebook Group so we can contact each other easily, especially since there will be a certain amount of last minuet changes to the programme, so if you're not a member already please email me and I'll invite you along.
By the way, the BLE count last night was very enjoyable and 27 bats came out to play. There could have been more but it got too dark to see them and they are rather shy about telling us they are there, they're not called 'whispering bats' for nothing.

Counts so far this year.
Hi All,
Just to let you know the results of the National Bat Monitoring roost site visits that some of us have done already this year.
The lovely little Brown Long Eared performed beautifully. All 36, which is a good average number for this roost, came out on time, did a twirl and vanished off to feed. The hospitality at the roost site was of course superb, the chocolate ginger biscuit and tea went down a treat, thanks Julie and John!
Despite conditions being good last night the Soprano Pips decided to keep their heads down. Strangely only 13 emerged so what has happened to the other 870 odd I really don't know.
Don't forget these counts please. There's more opportunities next week 17th or 18th for the BLE's or the 20th or 23rd for the Pips again - just maybe they'll show. Keep and eye on the programme, all the info is there. I know they can be boring but it would be a shame to break this good line of data we have on these two roosts. There are also date again in July to do repeats. In Aug I'll be doing some talks and walks so I'll need some vols to help please.

It's June, so it must be survey time!
Hi All,
June has finally arrived at last so it's time to get out your bat detectors, torches and midge spray, dust them off and get on out there. Through June we'll be concentrating on the static roost site emergence counts. The first one is this Friday at Comin Coch and we'll be watching Brown Long Eared, well listening to them more like. The rest of the month is littered with surveys so check out the programme which can be found on the link to the right of this post. Same pack drill as usual, if you're not sure email me.
A reminder to new members, you'll need to sign a membership form so remind me when you see me otherwise you won't be insured at all. This is third party insurance and will cover you if you do damage to property where we might be working, not to yourself unfortunately. You come on these surveys at your own risk.
As to the Rare Woodland Bat Project we've nearly finalised choosing our six woods that we feel come up to the criteria for Barbestelle needs. Once this is done - hopefully by me by the end of the week - we need to let the organiser know so we can get a loan of some equipment and some more training. Then we need to do risk assessments - yawn... It's hoped then that we'll start on these surveys by beginning July and through August - well, that's the plan.
