Understanding British Bats (Lifelong Learning Course AD305)

This course gives a thorough introduction to British bats. Species identification including dried/pickled specimens, life cycles, habits and habitats will be just some of the topics covered in the workshops. Practical and field exercises will involve a guide to summer and winter roosting sites and flight corridors, feeding patterns and behaviour. There will be late evening bat watch(es) using ‘’bat detectors’’. The distribution and status of these mammals, including BAP species and Wildlife Law, will be discussed briefly. Come and learn about British bats with an expert ecologist and with an interesting venue to explore. For this course it is advisable to stay on site or close by due to the late evening sessions.

Tutor: Fred Slater
Venue: Cilgerran Welsh Wildlife Centre 13/07/12-15/07/12

Coed Phoenix - postponed!

Sorry for the last minute notice, but due to the horrid weather the event at Coed Phoenix has been postponed. We will let you know as soon as we know the new date.

Just a quick update

Hi all,

Just to let you know how things are going and to let you know that we will try Panterhogfaen tonight! (Wed)

Despite the weather we've managed to do the pip count and the long eared and had reasonable number each time. We counted 26 long eared bats out, which is about average - so no problems there and at Cwm Rheidol on Monday we had 369, (a bit low for there) and two great sighting of serotine/noctule bats (I think the judge is still out on that).  We also had some fun with a camera and a set of antennae!

Just for interest, all our hard won survey results are put together to form the National Bat Monitoring Programme Annual Report which can be found on the BCT web site.

Hope to see some, if not all of you over the summer - the next two weeks are busy too and will give those who missed the first round of surveys a chance to get out and bitten to death! (I've now got so little hats for you all to wear).  There will also be a couple of field surveys to complete in July and perhaps some return visits to the others.

Next weeks events

Just a reminder that we've got the pip and natterer's survey's next week so we're going to be busy - the more of you the better.   If you can come to either or both please let me know and I'll keep you posted as to which day we actually intend going - that' all dependent on the weather of course.
Don't forget there is also another event planned for Saturday which would be good to go to.   Aline is again looking for some help on this.  She writes......

The bat walk is one of their ‘Wildlife Discovery Days’ for the public. More information, and directions for Coed Phoenix can be found here: http://www.thegreenphoenix.co.uk/
We’ll meet there at 7.45 for a chat and cup of tea with staff/ volunteers (please arrange to lift-share from Aber if possible). Coed Phoenix has recently received some funding for bat boxes and detectors, so it will be interesting to find out more.. and see what bats are around.
The bat group will then  do our usual introductory session, followed by a guided walk. (Coed Phoenix staff will show us the route).

If anyone would like to lead the walk and do the introduction (or share it with me), please feel free to offer your services  - I can provide a copy of the notes.
Best wishes,
Aline

See you all at some point over the next week

Now the work begins!

Hi All,

I'm sure I don't need to remind you that we start the BCT roost site counts this week.   We'll try Wednesday for the brown long eared at Comin Coch.  Please look at the programme for details.   We need to be there about 30 mins before sun set.   Please let me know if you intend coming.

Just to remind you, I've put two dates for most of the counts just to give a bit of leeway in case the weather is absolutely appalling. In this case, of the two days allotted, Wednesday looks to be the best - well that what the forecasters say!

See you there.   I'll be coming in from the North so if there is anyone who wants to share lifts just let me know.

By the way, we had lots of fun at Llanilar last week but the midges are horrible, so be warned.
